Hiking boots are highly recommended. The terrain can be uneven and rocky, and proper footwear will help you stay stable and comfortable, reducing the risk of injury. If you’re not sure, make sure your boots are well-fitted, supportive, and have good traction.

Yes, it’s a good idea to bring waterproof clothing. The weather in the mountains can change rapidly, and rain is common, even during summer months. Layering is key, so bring moisture-wicking clothes underneath to stay warm if you get wet.

Temperatures can vary in March and depending on the altitude, but on average, it can be quite cool, even in summer. Expect daytime temperatures between 10°C to 20°C, but it can drop to 0°C to 5°C or lower, especially in the evenings or during bad weather.

Yes, there are toilet facilities at certain points along the hike, but they can be limited, especially on the summit or in more remote areas.

The hike to the summit is a 22km round trip, and typically takes about 7 hours.

You’ll be staying at the Stillwell Hotel, located on Charlotte Way, at Charlotte Pass in the Snowy Mountains, for the duration.

The rooms are twin share, with ensuite bathrooms.

You’ll be staying here for the duration of the trip (no tents!)

Yes! Meals are included, as well as snacks for the walk.

  • Dinner – day 1 (Friday)
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner – day 2, hike day! (Saturday)
  • Breakfast – day 3 (Sunday)

Yes, remember to bring a water bottle you! Staying hydrated is essential, and you’ll need to carry enough water for the journey.

The Kosciuszko Challenge is graded introductory to moderate. The terrain is a mix of well-formed walking trails and rougher, rocky sections, especially closer to the summit. The path is generally moderate, but it can be steep and challenging in places. Expect alpine environments with some loose rocks, boulders, and uneven surfaces. It’s a manageable hike for most, but you should still be prepared for a bit of a workout.

It’s recommended you move three or four times a week, for at least three months prior to the hike. Jogging, cycling and hill walking with a day pack is advised in the lead-up.

A day-pack (20-30L). This should be enough to carry your essentials, such as extra warm clothing, rain jacket, water bottle, camera gear, your valuables, a hat and sunscreen.
