Justice Rachel Pepper was appointed as a Judge of the Land and Environment Court of NSW in May 2009.
She is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Sydney’s Law School and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law. She was the inaugural Visiting Fellow at the Centre for International and Public Law at the College of Law at the Australian National University and more recently a Visiting Scholar at the Melbourne University Law School.
Justice Pepper is a member of numerous committees and working groups including, the Ngara Yura Committee of the Judicial Commission of New South Wales and the AIJA Indigenous Justice Committee, President of the Australian Institute of Administrative Law, a member of the UNEP/ADB Pacific Environmental Dispute Resolution Mechanism Working Group and a member of the Thoracic Oncology Group of Australasia.
During 2017 and 2018 her Honour chaired the Scientific Inquiry into Hydraulic Fracturing of Onshore Unconventional Gas Reservoirs and Associated Activities in the Northern Territory.
From 1997 until her appointment to the bench, she practised as a barrister at the New South Wales Bar predominantly in commercial and public law. While at the bar, she was a member of Bar Council from 2000 to 2009.
She has edited and authored numerous books, law journals, book chapters and articles on environment and planning law, administrative law, constitutional law, criminal law and discrimination law, and has been published nationally and internationally.
